The refrigerators are cooled using one of two different types of gases. In old-model refrigerators, the commonly used gas was a chlorofluorocarbon commonly known as freon. The most recent refrigerators do not use Freon due to the known effects that this gas has on the environment. Instead, modern refrigerators use a less harmful gas known as tetrafluoroethane, which is also called HFC-134a. When a refrigerator does not cool properly, many users assume that the refrigerator has little cooling gas or coolant. Solving the problem of gas leakage of this type of equipment is a fairly easy task to perform.
- Examine the possible reasons why you suspect your refrigerator has a gas leak. If the refrigerator merely is not cooling properly, it is not supposed to have a gas leak. It is just as likely that your refrigerator is experiencing some type of component failure. The idea that refrigerator gas wears or decreases is an error. The gas exists within a closed system and is compressed. It does not dissipate naturally and, therefore, only a leak can cause less gas.
Smell around to see if there is a possible leak. If you suspect that there may be a refrigerant leak from the refrigerator, you should be able to smell it. Freon and HFC-134a have different odors that make them easy to detect. At the first sign of a gas leak, open the windows and doors and stay away from the refrigerator. These gases are not known if they have long-term health consequences, but they can cause disease in the short term that you certainly want to avoid. Both are heavier than oxygen, so the odor should remain close to the ground unless it is a significant leak that occurs quickly.
Unplug your refrigerator and use a soap and water solution to check for leaks. You can use a common soap and a little warm water to do this test. Fill a sprinkler bottle with the solution, separate the refrigerator from its corner and sprinkle some of the solutions on the coils and the compressor and its joints. If the gas is leaking, you should see that the solution begins to bubble at the point of the leak. This test does not work on all refrigerators. In some refrigerators, the mentioned components are closed and are not accessible.
Contact a qualified service technician. The determination of gas pressure in refrigerators requires special meters. Service technicians have the license and certificate to do this. Due to the laws that protect the environment from the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere, you must leave the work to a person who is authorized to do so. Also, if your refrigerator does not have a gas leak, the technician will be able to determine what your appliance needs to function properly.
